Ergonomic Assessment of Composite Ballistic Products

download article

The occurrence of hazards in the workplace needs to develop the measures to eliminate or reduce a risk to an acceptable level. Particularly difficult task concerns the security of workers from special services, i.e. intervention forces. Police officers and soldiers, who are part of teams of first impact are often exposed to bombard with modern weapons, thus requires the use of ballistic protection and a high performance protection.
A typical personal equipment used by the police and the military are the respective contributions of the vest and ballistic shields. In order to improve the quality and functionality of these products numerous studies and tests are carried out. In parallel with work to improve safety, it is necessary to conduct ergonomic studies to prevent physiological and psychological load of officers. Among solutions meet the relevant requirements of protection it should be always searching for those that represent the minimum body load, taking into account: the type of work, work-related technical parameters, duration of exposure, the ambient conditions (thermal environment), adjustment with other personal protective equipment.
The paper presents a methodology of assessment of the vests and ballistic shields from ergonomic point of view as well as from physiological and psychological responses of its users.

Energy Transmission from Bullet Impact onto Head or Neck through Structures of the Protective Ballistic helmet – Tests and Evaluation

download article

Design patterns of today’s helmets significantly differ from those used before. The differences are, first of all, accountable to the developments in the technology of materials used for helmet production. A bullet- and splinter-resistant helmet of today is a complex product in which the following two main parts may be identified: the helmet’s body and helmet’s framing. The applied materials allow for increasing the effectiveness of ballistic protection, however, the bullet stoppage on the helmet’s body does not guarantee appropriate protection of health and life.
An important component of helmet protection potential is the level of kinetic energy which is transferred onto helmet user’s body (the head or the cervical spine) during the process of penetration of the ballistic protection (a bullet- and splinter-resistant helmet) by a blowing element (a bullet or a splinter). The transfer of too much energy onto head may result in cranial fractures and cerebral or spinal injuries. The mechanism of such injuries is associated with accelerations and/or decelerations, resulting in a relative brain dislocation vs. the skull structure.
A Hybrid III, „head-neck” dummy model was used for energy transfer tests, the dummy’s structure and properties corresponding to the structure and properties of human head and neck. The obtained results will contribute to increased safety level of helmet users and to helmet structure optimisation.

Knit Materials for Applying into Clothing Products Protecting from Hot Thermal Agents

download article (in Polish)

The article presents characteristic of two knitting materials groups, which were developed with aramid yarns applied and contained modacrylic slowburning fibres. The research works included assessment of developed material and structure solutions of raw knitwear on a basis of usage requirements of the Standard on protective clothing for firemen PN – EN 13911:2006. Depending on kind of material as well as on the level of protection from hot thermal agents, the range of products of developed knit materials includes the balaclavas for firemen and internal layers clothing of protective equipment.

GORE-TEX® Technical Garments for the Workplace

download article

The article presents both products of GORE and the philosophy behind.
Advantages of weather- and work- protective GORE clothing come from precise laminate selection and its correct manufacturing into a garment designed to meet the needs.
Philosophy - how the analyses of the interdependancy of all relevant protective clothing components lead to taking measures across the entire value chain:

- knowledge of application areas and market requirements
- supplier selection
- laminate development and production
- microporous membranes - waterproof yet breathable and durable
- seam sealing
- garment design & engineering
- twelve performance standards
- rain, climate and field tests
- certification, support for manufacturers and brand licensing.
